Frequently Asked Questions

Please get in touch if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Every child develops at their own unique rate. While some may excel in one area, they may lag behind their age-matched peers in others. You may feel that your child is not communicating as effectively as other children their age, or are not able to access the same level of language during play or educational activities. In most cases, this can be completely normal, but depending on their age and the severity of the delay, this may warrant further investigation.

Similarly, as teenagers or adults, we may notice that we are able to cope well in some situations, but may also require further support with others, for example, becoming stuck on words or struggling to get the right words to come out when feeling anxious. If you are at all concerned with your own or your child’s speech, language or communication skills, it is important to have an open conversation about this with an honest, friendly professional.

Do you/ does your child:

  • Find it hard to find the ‘right’ words
  • Feel words become stuck or jumpy
  • Have difficulty with the pronunciation of sounds
  • Not say many words at all
  • Have difficulty within social situations or making friends/meaningful relationships
  • Find holding or starting a conversation problematic
  • Exhibit inappropriate/antisocial behaviours or unusual styles of play
  • Have additional sensory needs such as hearing deficit, sight problems, auditory processing disorder (APD), difficulties with textures (e.g. tactile defensiveness, eating/swallowing problems)
  • Avoid eye contact or display ‘quirky’ tendencies
  • Get frustrated or anxious when in social situations or needing to get your point across
  • Find gaining and maintaining attention and listening difficult

If any of the above relate to you or your child, you may benefit from Speech and Language Therapy input. Please note that this list is not exhaustive, so do not hesitate to get in touch should you wish to discuss any additional difficulties. There are no such thing as silly questions.

No. If you are eligible to see an NHS therapist or are currently on the waiting list to be seen, independent provision will not affect this. In fact, I encourage clients to enable joint working between independent and NHS therapists where possible. From past experience, parents have reported that they used independent Speech and Language Therapy as a ‘top up’ where the needs of the client were particularly high. As such, independent Speech and Language therapy can be utilised to adjust the treatment plan for the client to better suit their specific level of need. With consent from the client, information can be shared such as progress in different settings and complimenting treatment plans discussed and agreed.

After all, two heads are better than one.

I specialise in communication delays and disorders in individuals from birth through to young adulthood.
